The wire that won the West, barbed wire gained popularity, as well as
disdain, among ranchers in the 1880s. While some ranchers favored barbed wire
because it made raising purebred stock a possibility, there were other
ranchers who preferred the traditional open range thus the start of the
infamous range wars.
