Electrolytes
- Maintaining the Body Electric Horses
depend on electrically charged minerals, electrolytes, to
maintain the balance and flow of body fluids, transmit nerve
impulses, and maintain healthy muscles and circulatory
systems. The positive and negative charges of electrolytes
help to control the body’s pH (acid/base) balance, and in
transporting nutrients and waste products in and out of the
cells. During periods of training, performance, and high
temperature and humidity, horses lose large quantities of
electrolytes through sweat. In these conditions, horses need
additional electrolytes to maintain optimum fitness.
AccuLytes Paste provides a balanced, readily absorbable
supply of all six major electrolytes, in an easy-dosing
form.
Meeting
the Need Research has begun to
reveal the amount of electrolytes lost as horses sweat during
extended performance. While the total quantities vary with
exercise intensity, local temperature and humidity, the ratio
of minerals leaving the body in sweat remains fairly constant.
The AccuLytes Paste formula accurately reflects the
proportions of sodium, chloride, potassium, and phosphorus
lost in sweat, and provides extra amounts of crucial calcium
and magnesium.
Controlling
Acidity: Dietary Cation/Anion Balance Electrolytes
play a major role in the body’s efforts to buffer the
acid-base (pH) changes that occur as horses exercise. During
intensive work, training, and performance, the production of
energy to perform work releases increasing levels of acid
by-products, especially hydrogen ions. This acidification can
set the stage for early fatigue. Positively charged minerals,
called cations, help the body buffer acidifying by-products of
exercise metabolism, and help the horse maintain a pH balance.
When excess negatively charged minerals (anions) are present,
acidity increases and performance can suffer. Studies show
that a more positive dietary cation/anion balance (DCAB) can
be important for successful control of exercise-induced
acidity. The forms and ratios of electrolytes in AccuLytes
Paste have been carefully selected to give you the best
combination of optimum DCAB and accurate replacement of
minerals lost in equine sweat.
Advanced
Formulation AccuLytes Paste uses a
variety of quality mineral salts and amino acid chelates to
achieve a free-flowing blend that is easy to feed and readily
soluble in water. AccuLytes Paste is tuned for better
absorption with chelated forms of calcium and manganese and
the amino acid glycine, shown to enhance the absorption of
mineral electrolytes. The horse's natural digestive microflora
are sometimes damaged by elevated core temperatures during
extended exercise. As a bonus, AccuLytes includes five
encapsulated direct-fed microbial cultures, including
Lactobacillus acidophilus and other beneficial micro-organisms
compatible with the digestive tract of horses.
Recommended
Feeding Give 33 cc (one 33 gram
tube or 1/3 of 100 gram tube) in back of horse’s mouth daily
for moderate exercise, training, and performance. Store in a
cool, dry place away from children.
